1. Where is the Health Department?

The Texarkana-Bowie County Family Health Center is located at 902 West 12th Street.

2. Do you do physicals?

No, this service is not offered at this time. However, we do make referrals for health services.

3. If my child feels bad, can he / she still receive shots?

Children with mild acute illnesses, such as low-grade fever, upper respiratory infection, colds, otitis media (ear infection), and mild diarrhea, can and should be vaccinated.

4. Will these shots cause my child to run fever or feel bad?

Some vaccinations cause no problems at all, while others have common effects on the recipients. For example, DPT or Td might cause some muscle soreness or slight fever. When you or your child receive vaccines, the nurse discusses and provides vaccine information with you regarding the common reactions.

5. Do I have to have an appointment?

No. Patients sign in as they come in the clinic and are taken in that order. Sign in times are Monday-Thursday, between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m., and also between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

6. I lost my child's shot record. Can I get a copy?

Yes. There is a $2 fee for a copy of a shot record.

7. My child needs shots and I don't have the money right now. What can I do?

No individual will be denied essential public health services because of an inability to pay. The Health Department will make provisions for a reduced fee, or no fee for individuals that are unable to pay for services in full or in part.

8. I can't bring my child in for his/her shots-can someone else bring him / her?

Yes, this is possible. An adult, eighteen years or older, who is familiar with your child's health history, must accompany your child. This person must have a written statement with the following information:

• I give permission for (name of the adult) to bring in my child, (name of child) for any immunization needed at this visit.
• Parent Signature and Date

9. What Reproductive Health Services do you offer?

We offer a comprehensive program for both males and females which includes:

• Pap smear and breast exam provided by a local OB/GYN
• Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) testing/treatment/prevention counseling Immunizations
• Blood pressure screening


• Breast and testicular self-exam instruction
• Pregnancy testing/prevention counseling
• Emergency Contraception
• Nutrition counseling

10. How much do Reproductive Health Services cost?

Services are provided in accordance with Federal Poverty Income guidelines on a sliding fee scale and in some cases at no cost to the client.

11. Do I have to obtain a health department permit to sell food?

Yes. Anyone wishing to operate a food services establishment or sell any food products to the public within the city limits of Texarkana, Texas must obtain a permit before conducting such business.

12. How much does a health department permit cost?

Health department permit fees range from $25-$200, based on the type of establishment.

13. Do I need a health card to work in a food services business?

No. Not at this time.

14. Where can I find information about the requirements for operating a food service establishment and what the inspectors are looking for when they inspect a business?

Call or come by the Texarkana-Bowie County Family Health Center, where a copy of the Texas Food Establishment Rules can be purchased. This booklet contains the requirements for food service, and a copy of the inspection form used.
